Trump's Attacks on Voting Rights and 3 Things You Can Do About It
The right to vote is the foundation of American democracy.
The headlines are impossible to ignore: Donald Trump is repeatedly attacking Americans’ right to vote, relying on his far-right allies in Congress, state legislatures, and the Supreme Court to weaken our democracy.
But it’s nothing new for Trump. His attacks on our democracy and free and fair elections didn’t start with the Supreme Court’s recent decision to gut the Voting Rights Act in Louisiana v. Callais, nor did they begin on January 6th, 2021.
What IS new is that Trump’s facing a fed-up American electorate, and he’s desperate to keep his power -- desperate enough to escalate his attacks on democracy and voting even further.
Democrats have responded immediately every single time Trump tried to restrict voting rights -- with lawsuits, petitions, and grassroots mobilization to fight back.
We’ve notched key victories in our suit against Trump’s unlawful executive order to impose restrictions on voter registration. Then, when Trump signed his executive order to illegally restrict mail-in voting (just days after he himself voted by mail in a Florida special election!), we sued him again the very next day.
We’ve always been on the frontlines of the fight to protect and defend voting rights. We are uniquely positioned to challenge Trump’s illegal acts to protect Americans nationwide, and we take this responsibility seriously.
Because the right to vote -- the right to representation -- is what America was founded upon.
Ready to join us in the fight? Here’s how you can do your part:
1. Register to vote -- and make sure your friends are registered too!
Exercising your vote isn’t just your right, it is your civic duty as an American. Registering to vote or double-checking your voter registration can take just a few minutes! Make sure that you know where to go and what you need to bring to successfully vote -- it varies state-by-state.
Now is also a great time to reach out to your friends and family and make sure they are registered -- especially if they have moved recently.
2. Join Get Out The Vote (GOTV) efforts in your community
Whether you join a door-knocking canvass or hop on a phonebank for an hour or two, reaching out to voters personally to make sure they know when, where, and how to vote increases voter turnout. You’ll remind them that there is an election soon in their area and help them make their plan to vote.
You can join GOTV efforts by volunteering with your Democratic Senate candidate’s campaign. If your state doesn’t have a Senate race this year, check out a local Democratic campaign or your local Democratic Party.
3. Pitch in to the DSCC
The DSCC is in court right now to challenge Trump’s onslaught of illegal attacks on our right to vote. We’re also working around the clock to elect Democrats and flip the Senate blue in order to stop Republican abuses in their tracks, and you can directly support these efforts by pitching in to the DSCC here:
By taking each of these three steps (or even just one!), you are playing an active role in preserving the right to vote -- for yourself, your friends and family, and your community.
Thank you for doing your part to stand up for voting rights. When all of us fight back against Trump and Republicans’ efforts to disenfranchise Americans, we can hold them to account and strengthen our democracy for generations to come.
Onward to November,
-- Team DSCC
